Advent Overview - November 28, 2021

Welcome to the Season of Advent! We begin a new Church liturgical year and enter Year C, focusing on the Gospel of Luke for our Sundays. Advent is a bit longer than average this year, 27 days out of a possible 28 (including Christmas Eve), since Christmas Day falls on a Saturday making the fourth week 6 days long out of possible 7. By the way, Christmas on a Saturday makes for quite the full weekend, so heads up now, there will be no Saturday evening Mass or confessions on Christmas Day, Saturday the 25th.

Jesus the Alpha and the Omega - November 22, 2021

This is the last Sunday of our Church’s liturgical year. The Church celebrates the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Jesus is not only Lord of all space but also Lord of all time from the beginning to the end, as is stated in our second reading from the Book of Revelation: “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “the one who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty.” (Revelation 1:8) In a year that seemed dominated by the awful Delta-variant of COVID-19, we need to remember that Jesus is still has dominion and power over everything, from A to Z.

Eschatology - November 14, 2021

Eschatology is the branch of theology concerned with the study of the last or final things. The word comes from the Greek “Eskhaton” meaning “last”. As we come near end of the Church liturgical year, we get readings about the last things. This Sunday, the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time, is the penultimate Sunday of our year, and it refers to at least three last things, which makes it a bit confusing.

Prayers, Mosaic, Saints and Souls - October 31, 2021

Well done good and faithful servants! We accomplished our goal of having 2600 Rosaries said in the month of October, one Rosary for each parishioner family! We also finished filling in all the tiles on the mosaic! Thank you so much for all your prayers. I know these prayers have made a big impact as all prayers do, most especially the Rosary! I think we will have to do this again next October. For November, we have some new ways to focus our prayers—invoking the intercession of the saints and praying for the souls in Purgatory.

World Mission Sunday and Mission Statements - October 24, 2021

This Sunday, October 24th, is World Mission Sunday. The day is celebrated in all the local Churches as the feast of catholicity and universal solidarity so Christians the world over will recognize their common responsibility with regard to the evangelization of the world. We definitely want to remember, pray for, and support the work of missionaries throughout the world, but also, we must remember that we are missionaries right here where we are to the people around us.

Rosary and Adoration Event - October 17, 2021

Since October is the month of the Rosary, and praying together is such a powerful thing, I thought I’d plug a public Rosary event that will happening this Sunday evening. I too will be attending after the our parish 5pm Mass, so I’d love to see you there and pray with you.

Great Achievement Takes Daily Sacrifices

This weekend, Saturday, October 9th, I will be running the Little Apple Marathon (26.2 miles) held in Manhattan, KS. This will be my 11th marathon. I’ve run one a year for the past 11 years. I have to train a lot to achieve this. Looking at my Garmin, I’ve run well over 1,000 miles since my last marathon, averaging around 3 miles a day (but I run different distances on different days). The past month of September, my peak training, I ran 151.5 miles, averaging 5.1miles a day. In order to finish my marathon, it takes all of this training.

Respect Life Month and Month of the Rosary - October 3, 2021

October is Respect Life Month and also the month of the Rosary. This Sunday, Oct. 3 is Respect Life Sunday. As Catholics, we deeply value the dignity of all human life from its beginning at conception until its natural end. Yet, as you know not everyone in our society sees the issue as we do, and there are many threats to human life in our time. In addition, there has been lots of activity going on recently in government at both state and national levels.

Angel Week - September 25, 2021

I declare this week to be “Angel Week”! Wednesday, September 29th is the Feast of Archangels, St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael. Saturday, October 2 is the Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels. I highly encourage you to celebrate, honor, and befriend these good angels—and try to keep it going all year long. We need friends in high places, and these are some of the best! Following, I include my favorite (actually all the ones I know of) prayers to the angels.

Peace,
Fr. Greg
