Reflection on the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe - November 24, 2019

We’ve now reached the end of another liturgical year with the celebration of the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Pope Pius XI established this solemni-ty in 1925, celebrating one aspect of Jesus’ identity as opposed to events in his life and death (the Birth, the Crucifixion, the Resurrection, the Ascension, etc.) It is very interesting for this Mass that the Gospel is the story of the crucifixion, and in particular, the criminal who recognized Him as “the Christ”. The committee could have chosen a passage with Christ being exulted such as his triumphant entrance into Jerusalem, or his birth when he was visited by the Magi, or when he was presented at the temple. Nope. The crucifixion. It is by his death on the cross, and resurrection, that his glory was to be known.

Our songs this weekend all speak to Jesus’ identity as the King. We begin and close our liturgy with two strong hymns: “To Jesus Christ, Our Sovereign King” and “Festival Canticle: Worthy is Christ”. Both have texts extolling the greatness of Jesus, our King and God.

At offertory, we sing “Worthy is the Lamb”.
Here is that text to reflect upon this week:

Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive honor and glory.
Worthy are the ones who believe to receive the goodness of God.

Worthy are you, O Paschal Lamb. Wisdom and strength belong now to you.
You laid down your life and died upon the cross: we’ve become a people of hope.

Worthy are you, O Bread of Life. Salvation and joy belong now to us.
By conquering death and rising to new life, we’ve become a people of praise.

Worthy are you, O Risen Christ. Wonders and signs, revealing your might.
Your power and glory shine upon our lives: we’ve become your light for the world.
