Receiving the Sacraments for the First Time - May 24, 2020

A pastor, as the word itself signifies, is essentially a “shepherd” entrusted with the care of souls for those in his parish. The pastor’s responsibilities are laid out in Canon 528 of the church’s Code of Canon Law. They are multiple and include such things as: nourishing the faithful through the sacraments; preaching the word of God and the truths of the faith; providing for Catholic education, especially for children and young people; fostering charitable works and social justice; evangelizing the unchurched and those who have left the faith; and encouraging family prayer.

It is the role of the pastor also at times, to be able to celebrate certain sacraments of initiation that would normally be celebrated by a Bishop. This would include the permission to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for adults and children.

Because of the current pandemic, Archbishop Nauman has delegated me to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation here at Prince of Peace this Easter season. This will give me the honor to be the instrument God uses, to pour out His Spirit upon His people as he did on the disciples at Pentecost. In this sacrament, God offers the gift of the Spirit to strengthen his people for their service as disciples.

Over the weekends of May 23rd, 30th and June 6th, at select Masses on the weekend, I will celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) for adults who have been in the RCIA. I will also confer the grace of Confirmation to our Teenagers who have been preparing for two years to receive the sacrament which will prepare them to live an active, ongoing adult Catholic life.

Please join me in praying for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on all who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in the weeks ahead.
