Hell - November 26, 2023

“God is the infinitely good and merciful Father. But man, called to respond to him freely, can unfortunately choose to reject his love and forgiveness once and for all, thus separating himself for ever from joyful communion with him. It is precisely this tragic situation that Christian doctrine explains when it speaks of eternal damnation or hell. It is not a punishment imposed externally by God but a development of premises already set by people in this life. The very dimension of unhappiness which this obscure condition brings can in a certain way be sensed in the light of some of the terrible experiences we have suffered which, as is commonly said, make life ‘hell’.”

“In a theological sense however, hell is something else: it is the ultimate consequence of sin itself, which turns against the person who committed it. It is the state of those who definitively reject the Father's mercy, even at the last moment of their life.” - St. John Paul II

This quote from St. John Paul II is a perfect summation of what hell truly is. At our judgment, it is not something mean and tyrannical that Jesus is doing to us, rather it is solely due to the decisions we make. Jesus is totally just, if we have made the decision to not repent of a mortal sin, we have cut ourselves off from Jesus and our relationship with him and we justly deserve the place that we have sent ourselves. Hell is incredibly real, and we do not want to go there.

If there is something that we have done, some mortal sin, that we have not repented of….GO TO CONFESSION. It is a matter of our Salvation. There is nothing that Jesus will not forgive, unless we consciously make the decision to not confess it. Jesus loves you and wants you in heaven with him. How will you respond to that invitation of love?
