Ask For Our Mother's Guidance - May 10, 2020

I am sure when I was a youth that I went to my mother for many things — food, help with clothes, compassion when hurt, etc. WE all depend on our mothers for many things, from the moment we are conceived and for the rest of eternity. There can be many ways that our Blessed Mother Mary can help us as well and hopefully we depend on her for many things as well.

Relating to the scripture for this weekend, the first reading refers to the Hellenist people who complained about some of their members being neglected. I know that I felt neglected, being the youngest of 5, and I know that I complained about it to anyone who would listen. I did need to limit my complaints to my mother though, because she definitely had her limits as to what she could take, and she would let me know when I reached whatever that limit was to her.

The blessed mother does not have limits and actually not only asks us to go to her with any need, but she makes it better by telling us that she can personally take those complaints or requests directly to her son. Who doesn’t have a stronger connection to Jesus than His very own mom!

The second reading from 1 Peter, speaks about a spiritual home that is provided to us. Again, my mother provided a home of prayer and religion. She was a prayerful woman, and would encourage us to take our needs and prayers to God. My mother had us always pray before meals and before bed; to pray family rosaries and to make the annual trip to the cemetery on Memorial Day and pray over the graves of our family. My mother was good about using God’s name quite often, even though many times it was not in prayer (sorry mom).

And finally, the Gospel today gives us much needed encouragement from our Lord to not let our hearts be troubled. If we have faith in God, then we need to have faith in Jesus. WE need to know that the ultimate parent for all of us is our God who is Mother and Father and brother and sister to us. Our Divine parent has prepared a house for us in eternity and when we arrive, we won’t even need to clean it.

Pope Francis gave us a beautiful prayer to the Blessed Mother during this time of Pandemic.

O Mary,
You always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm.
You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana in Galilee, we may return to joy and feasting after this time of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father And to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of resurrection.
Amen.

Happy Mothers Day!!
